Cafe Giảng
Opening Hours
Why worth it
- Widely credited as the birthplace of Vietnamese egg coffee, invented here in 1946 during a wartime milk shortage
- Founder Nguyen Van Giang whisked egg yolk and sugar into coffee as a cream substitute — the recipe is unchanged today
- Tucked down a narrow alley that is easy to walk past if you dont know to look for it
- Still run by the founders son — his daughter runs the equally well-regarded Cafe Dinh nearby

Super memorable visit at this very local, popular and well known cafe with mini seats and mini tables. The highlight here is definitely the egg coffee - they have many different kids of egg coffee options with different toppings, including with Oreo, which is the one I had. Very unassuming place and decorated in a very homely way but the coffee was yummy, delightful and very very different and unique from other kinds of coffee. The egg was well whipped and the foam topped on top of the coffee gave a very layered taste - you can have the foam alone or mixed in with the coffee. I was so impressed. The other coffee options on the menu were also great especially the salted caramel coffee. The coffee itself was rich but not bitter. There were also other food items available to go with the coffee (like milk bites) although when I reached there in the evening time they were all sold out, which was a pity. They also sell boxes of the egg coffee to go as a lovely souvenir that you can take home, as well as adorable egg merch which were all very affordably priced. Coffees were 50k to 70k. Highly recommended to give this place a try! It was so crowded even though it was 830pm at night.
I think this is the kind of café experience that feels very Hanoi—you enter through a small alley, and suddenly discover that the café is much bigger than it looks from the outside. They have two floors, and although the space feels compact, it can accommodate quite a lot of people. There are even seats on the balcony upstairs! Of course, we had to try their famous egg coffee, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the best coffees I’ve ever tasted. So creamy, rich, and smooth—definitely lived up to the hype! They also sell their famous egg coffee in sachet packaging, and apparently, this is the only Café Giang branch that offers it. Of course, I had to bring some home with me!
Been to Giang Cafe many times and honestly, it’s still worth the hype. I personally love their authentic Cà Phê Sữa Đá more than the Egg Coffee. For me, the iced coffee is best paired with Bánh Mì. I always end up ordering both the Cà Phê Sữa Đá and Egg Coffee anyway! Lol I also love the ambiance. It feels like a traditional Vietnamese home turned into a cozy coffee house, which gives it so much character. They have another branch at Trang Tien Plaza, but that one feels more like a modern café. Come early in the morning or around brunch time if you want a better chance of choosing a nice seat, especially on the veranda or in the AC room. Definitely a Hanoi classic worth experiencing.
We visited this cafe to try Hanoi’s famous egg coffee. The place was small from the outside but full with the customers in every corner. Even though there are many customers, the service was good, and our order was served quickly. We ordered the original iced egg coffee, along with the cocoa and mung bean versions. The egg foam was good and creamy without any fishy taste. Definitely worth trying and highly recommended!
I tried the famous egg coffee, and it was absolutely amazing! The coffee was rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced with a smooth, velvety egg foam on top. It had a unique flavor unlike any coffee I’ve had before. The atmosphere was cozy, the staff were friendly, and the service was excellent. If you’re visiting Hanoi, this is definitely a must-try experience. Highly recommended! ☕🥚🇻🇳
