Restaurant Tam Gia Trang
Opening Hours
Why worth it
- A restaurant rated 3.9, on the lower end for Ninh Binh but still positively reviewed by many
- The name suggests a traditional, family-style dining setup (Tam Gia Trang roughly translates to Three Family Garden)
- Worth checking recent reviews given the more mixed rating compared to nearby spots

One of the best place in Ninh Binh: very good food and authentic taste for a very decent price. It is packed so book in advance if you want to dine in or take out. We came here twice on the weekend. The goat is very good here and all other dish are very good as well.
The food is OK. The restaurant has put a lot of effort into the bowls, plates, and decor, but the water/beer cups are plastic, which reduces the overall value of the dining experience. Please consider changing it.
Waited over 1 hour to get 4 dishes when the restaurant wasn't even busy. The crab soup is just tomato soup. The goat meat is very hard to eat. A cockroach landed on my wife's back! And we saw a mouse running around!
One of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. While we were looking through the menu, so many cockroaches came out from it, which was absolutely disgusting and extremely unhygienic. What made the situation even worse was the waiter trying to kill them with his bare hand directly on our table, as if it were something completely normal. We completely lost our appetite after that. The restaurant clearly lacks basic hygiene and cleanliness standards. Absolutely not recommended
We ate here twice on the same trip to Ninh Binh. The restaurant has an very extensive menu. Price is reasonable. Service is fast. Make sure to check the bill carefully. The food was delicious and decently clean. We didn’t have any stomach flu. What we had was - sprout salad/ Nộm rau mầm: good - Eel stew with young bananas and tofu/ Lươn om chuối đậu: excellent - bacon stirred with shrimp paste/ thịt rang mắm tép: ok. Too much fat - blanched carrots and white raddish dipped in fish paste / củ cải luộc chấm mắm cáy: good. But ask for salt sesame to dip because the fish paste has very strong smell. - blanched green leafy vegetables/ rau luộc chấm muối vừng: delicious - fish hot pot/ lẩu cán lăng: delicious - morning glory stirred fried with garlic: delicious - deep fried frog/ ếch tẩm bột chiên: delicious - boiled calamari/ mực trứng hấp: good - grilled shrimps/ tôm đồng nướng: not good. The shrimps were tiny and had lots of hair.
