I arrived around 1:30pm, on a weekday, there’s a line with about 30 people in front of me & the place seemed packed, I hesitated if I should stay. I stayed & it’s an experience that’s worth the wait. My wait was about 40mins. Their lining arrangement is quite organized, staffs will call people in & direct you to your spot. It’s a standing diner. I was lucky my spot was close to the chef & watched him in action (his famed flame-throwing cooking technique!) The food is fresh & delicious, reasonably priced. Staffs are polite & friendly. Note: I noticed the line was significantly shorter when I was leaving around 2:45pm.
Great street food sushi experience! I stopped by in the afternoon and had a really fun time. Everything was super fresh and very tasty — you can really feel the quality in every bite. The atmosphere is casual and enjoyable, perfect for a quick but satisfying stop. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the freshness and quality you get. Definitely worth trying if you’re around!
I saw this on another review and will quote and steal it because i completely agree. "I had high expectations and I can confidently say Toyo delivered. Was it the best food of my life? Nope. Was the food and experience worth the money? Absolutely." The seared tuna is the highlight both for show and taste. The quality of the ingredients overall is really good, and the chef knows* everyone is there for the experience and delivers 100% I would recommend trying it out, you probably won't regret it. About the experience... we got there 12:30 because it opens at 1pm and there were people ahead of us already. By 1:00pm there were about 30 people in line. You get assigned to your table (there's no seating fyi) and i would suggest ordering everything you want at once. It makes everything easier, you *can* order as you go, but you'd wait a bit longer. Chef Toyo has retired i hear, so we did not get to see him. But he has picked a worthy successor who is energetic, kind and loves what he does (:
Izakaya Toyo, made famous by Netflix’s Street Food: Asia, offers a truly raw and authentic Japanese street food experience that feels more like an event than a typical meal. Set as a small open-air stall under the trees, the atmosphere is lively, crowded, and slightly chaotic, with long queues forming even before opening hours, guided by simple handwritten signs. Despite its global fame, the place remains unpolished and local in the best way, with everything prepared right in front of you. The food is straightforward but exceptional, featuring thick, fresh cuts of tuna, otoro, uni, and ikura, alongside smoky grilled eel and simple seafood dishes that highlight ingredient quality. The iconic flame-seared tuna cheek adds a dramatic touch, reinforcing why the stall became world-renowned. Dining here means standing, sharing space with strangers, and embracing a fast-paced, no-frills system, but that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable—less about comfort and more about experiencing genuine Japanese street food culture at its finest.
Came here after watching their reviews on YouTube. The Uncle Chef / owner, have since retired and his apprentice have taken over the business. Food is nothing special but seafood are fresh. Limited tables but no sitting.
