This spot is always packed, so expect a bit of a wait. Loved this dish, fresh veggies & meat with a crispy coating and surprisingly not oily. Doteyaki was the real winner for me though. Super soft, super flavorful & the sweet savory miso sauce was so good. Fair warning, keep an eye on your wallet 😂 their portions are tiny, so it’s easy to get carried away and order way more than you planned XD
I visited Tengu, a kushikatsu spot in Osaka, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The place gives off a very traditional Japanese vibe it felt like a classic local gem. Even though there was a line when we arrived, it moved surprisingly fast, so the wait wasn’t bad at all. I honestly never thought I would like fried skewers this much, but everything was so crispy, light, and flavorful. It didn’t feel overly heavy, and each skewer had its own unique taste. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in Osaka.
Ask for an english menu if you’re a foreigner and it makes it much easier to order. I ordered 6 sticks of beef, tendons, shrimp, lotus root, pork and shitake. Be prepared to wait for at least 1 hour if you’re visiting at lunch hours (11am to 1pm).
Went by myself around 6 on Friday, had to wait about 10 min. There are two shops across from each other. The menus are all Japanese and I had to use my limited reading ability, however, they seemed to be fine with basic English as well. Food comes out right in front of you, straight from the oil. Piping hot and with the sauce is pretty great. Prices seem reasonable but can add up if you keep going. The oyster was my favorite but all of it was very tasty.
After hearing great things about this place we decided to try the kushikatsu here. We arrived just after they opened as we’d seen so many locals in a long queue the day before and we were hoping to minimise our wait time. Luckily we grabbed the last two seats and were given a menu in English and Japanese which was helpful for us to decide quicker. The staff were also very patient with us as it was obvious that we couldn’t speak Japanese but we were trying our best! We ordered a skewer each of the Beef, Shishito Pepper, Shiitake Mushroom and the Shrimp. And we didn’t wait too long before our food arrived and it was really delicious! Not at all what we expected, with the batter being so light and not like anything we’d had before. Really glad we weren’t scared off by the queue on the previous day and made the effort to go back. Would definitely recommend but we would suggest an early arrival! Note: Cash only
