Had banh xeo/ banh khot for lunch. This location gives you a generous amount of vegetables and fish sauces. Huge portion size keeps you full the rest of the day if you’re stopping by for lunch. We had started with some delicious spring rolls for appetizer as well, they were really refreshing. The restaurant is in an alley but some of the best culinary cuisine in Vietnam can usually be found from an alley 👍
We stopped at Bánh Xèo Miền Tây as part of a Ho Chi Minh City food tour, and in hindsight, it was the perfect place for a first introduction to both bánh xèo and bánh khọt. First impressions matter, and this one set the bar high. At the time, I didn’t yet have much context. Since then, I’ve eaten plenty of versions around the city and beyond, and I can say with confidence that this remains one of the best. The bánh xèo arrives exactly as it should: audibly crisp, generously filled with shrimp, mung beans, and enoki, and paired with the usual vibrant basket of fresh greens and herbs that turns each bite into a build-your-own balance of texture and brightness. As good as the bánh xèo is, the bánh khọt truly shines here. Crisp-edged, rich, and deeply satisfying, it was the dish that lingered in memory long after the table cleared. If there’s a reason to return, this is it. Service only strengthens the experience. The staff is warm, welcoming, and genuinely eager to share the business and process with all interested in seeing the behind the scenes, which makes the meal feel both approachable and celebratory. Whether it’s your first encounter with these Vietnamese staples or your tenth, Bánh Xèo Miền Tây delivers with consistency, generosity, and hospitality. It’s a place that teaches you what these dishes are supposed to taste like, and then does it better than most.
They thought I was a foreigner, so I was treated very well and warmly at first. When I asked for the price of Banh Khot, the owner told me $85,000vnd. I ordered and sat down. However, as I am eating, I can hear the same owner telling everyone that was paying it was $75,000vnd. I finished my food and asked again, and I was told again $85,000vnd. I proceeded to ask her in Vietnamese why am I paying $10,000vnd more for the same food. The smiles went away and the tone changed immediately. She looked at me and said “I thought you ordered something else”. There is only 1 type of banh khot on the menu, so there wasn’t anything else I could order. Keep in mind, this is the lady that took my order and told me the price initially. Further more, I was the only one that didn’t get a receipt when paying probably because she knew it would show the real prices. The food was beyond mid. The veggies were old and dirty. Banh khot were greasy and lackluster on toppings with no flavor. I grew up here in Vietnam and this is the first time in awhile I thought I’d might get food poisoning from raw veggies. Also, there were tour groups back to back. At some point half the restaurant were foreigners. This is not a good sign because if your tour guide is taking you here, they’re most likely getting a cut. I love my culture, I love our food, but scammy places like this that fluctuates prices based on faces gives this city a bad name.
The Banh xeo was really good, we loved pairing it with the greens they provided and the dipping sauce. The Banh Kot was ok, we found it wasn't as flavorful as the Banh xeo. I'd definitely check this place out if you're near by. For the two plates plus an iced tea we paid 121k
