During lunch time you can wait little longer (about an hour), but the restaurant has a great waiting system, we were lucky and had a direct view of the skilled chefs who were preparing delicious okonomiyaki. Great food and atmosphere were definitely worth it. An unforgettable experience! Thank you :)
Okonomiyaki Nagata-ya – The Best Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki Near Peace Memorial Park If you are looking for the best places to eat in Hiroshima, Okonomiyaki Nagata-ya is a legendary must-visit restaurant. Located right at the entrance of the Hondori Shopping Arcade and just steps from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, it is the ultimate destination for authentic Japanese soul food. What sets this apart from the Osaka version is the iconic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki technique, where ingredients are layered rather than mixed. I watched as they masterfully built the dish: a thin crepe base, a mountain of fresh cabbage, bean sprouts, savory pork belly, and yakisoba noodles, all finished with a generous topping of green onions and their world-famous Nagata-ya Otafuku sauce. The atmosphere inside is retro and lively. We sat at a table with a built-in teppan (hot plate), which is the only way to experience this Japanese culinary highlight—it keeps the food sizzling perfectly. I was also impressed by their inclusivity; they offer some of the best vegetarian and vegan okonomiyaki options in Japan, making it perfect for every international traveler. This was a standout gastronomy experience on our Japan itinerary. Don't leave Hiroshima without trying it!
Having walked past this restaurant several times and seen the long queues, I became curious and decided to give it a try. The restaurant serves Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Be prepared for a wait as I queued outside for about an hour, followed by another 30+ minutes inside before the food was served. We ordered gyoza, fried fish cake, and butter-fried oysters to start. The gyoza was disappointing as it appeared to be frozen and lacked the juicy filling you’d expect from a good version. The fried fish cake with some chicken was decent, while the oysters were fresh but slightly on the salty side. The main highlight, the okonomiyaki, unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations. Parts of the noodles were overcooked to the point of being too crispy, while others clumped together. The overall flavour was quite bland and required a heavy amount of sauce to bring it together. The egg and noodles felt detached, and the batter was firm, making it difficult to cut and chew. It feels like the high volume of tourists may be affecting consistency, with dishes rushed out from a small, crowded teppanyaki setup. Overall, I don’t think it’s worth the long wait. There are many other places nearby or even within Hiroshima Station that serve equally good, if not better, okonomiyaki without the hassle. Not recommended if you’re short on time.
If you’re looking to feature a trendy, buzzing restaurant on your social media, this might be the place. However, the food was quite disappointing. With several chefs cooking at the same time, it felt like we may have been served by a less experienced one, as our noodles didn’t meet expectations. We waited close to the stated 90 minutes, which we wouldn’t have minded if the food had been worth it, we’re foodies and we expected the queue to be long. Unfortunately, today’s wait just didn’t justify the outcome. That said, the waitress was kind and attentive. When we mentioned we were catching a train, she quickly arranged for us to be seated and informed the kitchen to prioritize our order. Even though we still had to wait, her effort and thoughtfulness did not go unnoticed.
