Kani Doraku’s Dotonbori main store in Osaka is an absolute must for any crab lover. The moment you spot the giant moving crab sign, you know you’re in for something special. We ordered the crab course and it was a flawless showcase of ‘one crab, many ways’—the crab sashimi was translucent, sweet and melt-in-your-mouth fresh; the charcoal-grilled crab legs carried a smoky aroma that intensified the natural sweetness; the crab hot pot in that delicate white soy broth was comforting and packed with umami; and the crab kamameshi (rice pot) at the end, infused with crab essence, was simply addictive. Even the chawanmushi and crab tempura were executed with real finesse. Service was attentive and polished, the private tatami rooms made it feel like a proper Japanese dining experience, and the whole meal felt both festive and refined. Yes, it’s tourist-famous, but the quality absolutely lives up to the hype—easily one of the most memorable crab feasts I’ve had in Japan. 🦀

As a long-time fan of the Yakuza games, visiting Kani Doraku was something I had been looking forward to for years. Anyone familiar with Dotonbori will instantly recognise the giant moving crab sign outside the restaurant. After walking past it countless times in both the game and real life, I finally stepped through the doors. The meal was a true celebration of crab from start to finish. We enjoyed sweet and fresh crab sashimi, delicate steamed crab, charcoal-grilled crab legs, a rich and flavourful crab hotpot, and even crab rice to round out the meal. Every dish showcased a different side of the ingredient, and the quality was consistently excellent throughout. One unexpected highlight was our seat on the second floor. From the window, we could watch the endless flow of people below along Dotonbori, along with the sightseeing boats passing through the canal. It added an extra layer of atmosphere to an already memorable dining experience. Service was attentive and professional, and despite being one of Osaka’s most famous restaurants, the experience never felt rushed. Kani Doraku is more than just a meal. It is a quintessential Osaka experience that combines great food with one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. For crab lovers and Yakuza fans alike, this is absolutely worth doing at least once.

It’s my 2nd time visiting the store Food is great, service is awesome as usual. Average time for set meal takes approximately 2 hours to complete For kids, children meal is much more suitable. My teenage boys ain’t so much into raw food & kids meal serving is too little for them Crab is naturally sweet, serving is reasonably generous. From raw to cooked to carbs & finishing off with desert. Set meal is highly recommended if you are unsure of what to order as the menu is quite a list

I genuinely enjoyed this crab feast! The venue is iconic, and it’s an amazing feeling to eat delicious king and snow crab while watching the insanity of the crowds outside the window. Tablet ordering makes it a breeze to enjoy a variety of selections from the broad menu, but the snow crab sushi and king crab “chunks” are not to be missed. The crab karage wasn’t particularly worth it - mostly fried shell that was inedible, but the crab shumai made up for it! If it’s your first time in dontonbori, definitely check this place out.

A very popular place for snow crabs. Venue was full on arrival, seating was upstairs, very comfortable and spacious. Meal was a set comprising of raw, tempura and boiled crabs with associated condiments and side dishes. Very fresh and delicious sweet crab meat, thoroughly enjoyed the offerings. Finished off with vanilla ice cream and thick matcha. Service staff were very friendly and very efficient.
