Bún riêu Gánh
Why worth it
- A famous street-side bún riêu (crab and tomato noodle soup) stall beside Ben Thanh Market, running for over 40 years
- Served the traditional 'gánh' way, from a shoulder-pole carrying cart rather than a fixed restaurant setup
- A genuine taste of old Saigon street food culture, beloved by generations of locals

One of our fav bún riêu spot whenever we're in HCMC! We were there about 3:45pm and it was busy but wasn’t crazy busy! The shrimp chili paste adds a rich umami to the broth! It’s so delicious and comforting! We also had the pork dumplings and it was SO good! One plate is not enough for sure! 🫢 Highly recommend if you're in the area! There’s a great bánh mì spot called Storm Bite. Great bánh mìs! And, also an amazing massage place called Aman Spa 😌 perfect location! Head to Aman Spa for a massage then to Bun Rieu Ganh and take away Storm Bite ❤️
Crowded, well managed, clean, efficient, good quality, good tasting noodle soup. Unfortunately, it has too much diverted from the original popular bún riêu which was simpler, lighter, ... Too much has become less.
Sometimes its worth visiting a vietnamese street food styled restaurant, but be prepared to cramp it in with locals or other tourists. They basically serve a main item, that being the Bún Riêu, served in a very packed, small bowl. The additional flavoursome items of minced crab, tofu, water spinach, tomato, and a selection on condiments are need to bolster a noodle soup needing more flavour. That coupled with the energetic nature of a very popular and busy restaurant, made for a very satisfactory lunch. The seating is small, and not big guy friendly, but thats a common element of Vietnamese street food establishments, and you need to be aware of your own limitations. This was a great stop off for lunch, the service was very quick, and the size of the meal matched the affordable price. For a main dinner I think you could do better in a larger more specialised Bun Rieu restaurant. But the clean lively street food type experience, close to Ben Thanh Market, makes this restro worth a visit.
Bún riêu Gánh: A Legendary Taste of Saigon's Soul Forget fancy interiors—the magic of Bún riêu Gánh happens on a humble sidewalk near Bến Thành Market, where a single, steadfast "gánh" (carrying pole) has served up one of Saigon's most iconic bowls for generations. This is not just a meal; it is a culinary pilgrimage. The broth is the undisputed star—a deep, complex crab and tomato base simmered to a rich, savory-sweet perfection that lingers wonderfully on the palate. Each component shines: the fluffy crab meatballs, silky tofu, tender snail meat, and the essential dash of fermented shrimp paste (mắm tôm) that ties everything together into an unforgettable symphony of flavor. Yes, you'll likely queue. Yes, you'll sit on tiny plastic stools. But that's all part of the authentic, five-star experience. The sheer consistency, depth of flavor, and vibrant local atmosphere make every moment worth it. For a taste of true, uncompromising Saigon street food heritage, Bún riêu Gánh is an absolute must-visit. It’s a perfect, flavorful chaos that captures the heart of the city.
The restaurant is small but clean, with space downstairs and upstairs. The restaurant serves delicious local crab noodle soup. The price is reasonable compared to the quality and location of the restaurant. The staff is very fast and enthusiastic. If you come by car, it will be difficult to find a parking space because this is a central area.
