Tonkatsu Ganko Nara
Opening Hours
Why worth it
- Known for tonkatsu fried to order, with a traditional wooden interior and staff in kimono
- Comes with unlimited miso soup, rice and shredded cabbage refills on most set menus
- A fun touch: you grind your own sesame seeds at the table to make your dipping sauce
- Popular enough that dinner-hour queues are common, though they tend to move quickly

The food at Tonkatsu Ganko Nara was delicious. One of the best tonkatsu I’ve ever ate! The curry was rich and flavorful, and the premium pork was incredibly tender and melted in your mouth. The sauce paired perfectly with the meal. The restaurant was clean, the service was excellent, and there are counter seats where you can watch the chefs cook. It’s a popular spot, so it can get busy, but it’s definitely worth the visit.
Cozy and yummy katsu restaurant to try after you’re done exploring Nara. Arrived and immediately went over to the kiosk to get a ticket as there is a bit of a wait. However, the wait wasn’t too long and we made it in within 10-15 minutes during what seemed to be a peak time. Staff was nice, efficient, and spoke a little bit of English. Sauces were delicious and on point! I loved the sesame dressing with the cabbage. The pork cutlet was nice and crispy! The curry was okay though. Not the best curry I’ve had in Japan but decent! Overall, great place to try!
This is a popular place. There was a brief wait for a table, but not terribly long. When it was our turn to be seated, we were grouped with 7 others and shuffled to another building. We didn't know where we were going or what to expect. In the end, it was about 2-3 blocks away. I would suggest this secondary location because its more spacious and on the day we went, it was hot, so the AC in the restaurant was very nice. Not sure if the other location would have been as cool or spacious, we assumed it was smaller. Tonkatsu was crispy and the curry had the right amount of spice.
The pork cutlets are surprisingly yum. The golden-brown yet crispy crust matches perfectly with its tender pork inside. The finely shredded cabbage is refillable. Overall it is satisfying. I would recommend everyone to drop by after having a relaxing stroll at Nara park.
This place very popular, we went around 12:30 there are quite few people waiting but they are well organized, we got seated not too long. We order one black pork and one regular pork, it turns out the cheap regular pork is more juicy than the more expensive black pork. Overall we are happy with the meal they gave us second serve of cabbage salad. However I do feel the oil is getting old even at this early hour of lunch time. Hope they have better quality control of their frying oil.
