Passed by on Saturday at 11am on the way to Gion. They offer a wide range of onigiri, healthy and well packed. You can order and sit upstairs. They offer water and hot green tea. Clean and spacious and tasty food. I would recommend.
A little gem I saved in my list, conveniently located near my hotel. The onigiri (rice balls) are so good!the rice is soft, chewy, and perfectly sticky. They taste delicious regardless warm or cold. Definitely worth trying.
A Rice Ball Revelation! The Best Onigiri I've Ever Had This shop in the heart of Kyoto has completely redefined what a rice ball can be. Onimaru is an onigiri specialty store where "omusubi" (a more elegant term for rice balls) are elevated to a level of flavor and craftsmanship that has to be tasted to be believed. The concept is brilliant: premium, freshly cooked rice (they're meticulous about their grains) is sometimes lightly grilled over binchotan charcoal for a hint of smokiness and then topped with an incredible variety of "side dishes". It goes far beyond the simple fillings of convenience stores. 🌟 What Makes It Unforgettable · Endless Variety & Premium Ingredients: You'll find over 20 different types, from classic flavors to luxurious combinations. The standouts are their "Gochisou Yakimusubi" (deluxe grilled rice balls) where toppings are piled high. · The Taste is Next-Level: The rice is the true star—plump, flavorful, and expertly cooked. Each topping is seasoned to perfection. It’s a satisfying, soul-warming meal. · Perfect for Tourists: The grab-and-go system is simple. Just pick your favorites from the display, pay at the register (cards accepted), and you're set. There's also a cozy second-floor eat-in space with free-flowing tea, perfect for a quick, affordable lunch. 🍙 Top Flavor Recommendations With so many choices, here are some crowd-pleasers to look for: · Grilled Pork and Egg (炙りポークたまご): A signature choice, often called the "Deluxe Rice Ball." Features savory grilled pork and a fluffy egg omelet. · Aromatic Sauce Shrimp Tempura (香味だれ海老天ぷら): For a luxurious treat, this comes with three large, saucy shrimp tempura on top. · Chirimen Yuzu Sansho (ちりめん柚子山椒): A refreshing Kyoto-style flavor with dried sardines, fragrant yuzu citrus, and Japanese pepper. It’s unique and frequently mentioned as a favorite. · Grilled Tarako & Camembert (炙りたらことカマンベール): A surprising and delicious fusion of salty cod roe and creamy cheese. · Classics Done Right: Don't overlook their excellent Tuna Mayo or the simple, fluffy Thick Egg (ふんわり厚たま) omelet rice ball. 📍 Plan Your Visit · Address: 京都府京都市下京区四条通寺町東入御旅宮本町11. It's incredibly central, just a 1-2 minute walk from Kyoto Kawaramachi Station. · Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. · Your Tip is Spot-On: Buying them the night before for the next day's adventure is a perfect plan. They hold up very well. For the best experience, you can also eat in and warm them up in the provided microwave. This is more than a snack shop; it's a destination for delicious, high-quality food that’s uniquely Japanese. The lines are a testament to its quality, but they move quickly. If you love rice, or just great food, make sure Onimaru is on your Kyoto itinerary. I will be dreaming about these rice balls until my next visit.
Tried three onigiri here and honestly loved them. The spam one was definitely my favorite—I usually don’t even like spam because it’s too salty, but this one was perfectly balanced. It had a really nice grilled, slightly smoky flavor, and went so well with the shiso and sweet tamagoyaki. So satisfying and surprisingly filling. Also had the prawn and the yuzu sansho. The prawn one was really good too, and while the yuzu sansho was a bit lighter than I expected, it was still refreshing in its own way. Would definitely come back for the spam one🙌👍🏻
Many customers and you just grab what you need. I got the one with ham and one with tamago. Taste wise okay, nothing stand out too much. There is a seating indoor upstairs but you need to pay 55 yen for that. Good for a rest if you are tired walking around there
